Why it does not pay to wait
Dead, missing, or unlinked detectors are the difference between a warning and a tragedy. Carbon monoxide has no smell, and a fire at night gives you seconds. This is the lowest-cost, highest-stakes electrical work in the whole house.
A smoke alarm in the hallway does you no good if the fire starts in a back bedroom and you never hear it in time. Code calls for interconnected detectors for a reason. When one goes off, they all go off, and you get the seconds that matter.

What you can check yourself first
Before you call, here is what you can safely check on your own. Even if you still call us, you will walk in knowing more than you did.
- Press the test button on each detector. No chirp or no sound means it is due.
- Check the date on the back. Most smoke units expire at ten years, CO units sooner.
- Note whether they are interconnected: does one going off set them all off?
- Count the bedrooms. Code wants one in each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level.
