Many people still ask for a 220v outlet, and some appliance manuals say 230. They mean the same thing. Homes are served at 120 and 240 volts, and a 220v outlet, a 230 volt outlet and a 240V outlet all name a receptacle fed by both hot conductors from the panel. What sets one 240V outlet apart from another is its amperage and the shape of its slots.

The plug on the equipment tells us what it needs. A dryer usually takes a 30 amp receptacle and a range a 50 amp one, while welders, compressors and EV chargers list their circuit size in the instructions. The receptacle, the breaker and the wire all have to agree with that rating. A 50 amp outlet on wire sized for 30 amps will overheat the first time the equipment runs long at full draw.

Older homes often have three prong dryer and range outlets, where the ground and the neutral share one wire. New circuits are run with four wires, a separate ground and neutral, and new appliances usually ship ready for a four prong cord. When we replace or add an outlet we tell you which you have and what changing it involves.

Before we wire anything, we check the load. A 240V circuit is a large share of what a panel can carry, so we add the new equipment at its rated load to what the home already draws. If the panel has room, the work goes ahead. If it does not, you hear that first, with the options and a price for each.

Garages and workshops get their own attention. Outlets there may need GFCI protection depending on the location and the code the city has adopted, and a welder or a compressor outlet is set where the equipment's cord reaches it without an extension cord.

How 240V outlet installation goes

  1. 1.You tell us the equipment and where it goes, and the plug type or amperage if you know it.
  2. 2.The electrician checks the panel's load and open spaces and plans the run from the panel to the outlet.
  3. 3.You get one flat price for the 240V outlet and approve it before work starts.
  4. 4.The circuit is run, the breaker and receptacle are matched to the rating, and the outlet is tested at voltage before the equipment is plugged in.

No. 220, 230 and 240 are names people use for the same household voltage. Utilities deliver close to 240 volts, and older manuals and many people still say 220. The receptacle you need is set by the equipment's amperage and plug, not by which of those numbers is printed on the box.
