What the work involves

How do hotels get electrical work done with guests in the building?

Hotel electrical work is planned around guests. Room renovations run floor by floor, with rooms taken out of inventory only while they are worked on, in a sequence set with the general manager. Kitchen and laundry circuits come first on a maintenance agreement, and our emergency line answers 24 hours a day for night failures.

Guest floors and room renovations

Room renovations run floor by floor, with rooms taken out of inventory only while they are worked on. Lighting, receptacles at the desk and bedside, and the circuits for each room's heating and cooling unit are updated together. We plan the floor sequence with the general manager.

Kitchens, laundries and back of house

Hotel kitchens and laundries draw heavy loads all day, and their equipment is wired from the cut sheets with GFCI protection where NEC 210.8(B) requires it. Failures here stop room turnover or food service, so these circuits are first on a maintenance agreement.

Emergency lighting and exit signs

Corridors and stairs are life safety spaces. NFPA 101 sets a monthly 30 second test and an annual 90 minute test for battery units, with written records. We test, repair and replace units and keep the records the inspector asks for.

Pools, parking and amenities

Pool equipment falls under NEC Article 680, which covers the pumps, the lighting, the bonding and the GFCI protection around the water. Parking lot lighting, signage and EV charging for guests each need their own circuits and planning.

Permits and standby power

Inside the city limits permits go through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department under the 2023 NEC, adopted effective May 1, 2025. Which loads ride on standby power is set by the building's design and the authority having jurisdiction.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

The trouble in a hotel is a failure at night with a full house. Our emergency line answers 24 hours a day, and scheduled maintenance with infrared scans of the loaded panels catches the connections that would fail first.
