What the work includes

What does a commercial standby generator installation include?

A commercial standby generator installation includes a load study, the automatic transfer switch and feeders, the electrical permit and inspection, and scheduled maintenance after. The system is wired to its NEC classification: emergency under Article 700, legally required under 701, or optional under 702. A licensed plumber runs any gas line, which we coordinate and quote separately.

Load study and sizing

A commercial generator is sized from the loads it has to carry and how they start. We measure and list the loads with you, and where the job calls for stamped drawings, we work from the design professional's plans.

  • Measured and listed loads
  • Motor and compressor starting loads
  • Room for the loads you plan to add

Emergency, legally required or optional

The National Electrical Code treats standby power three ways: emergency systems in Article 700, legally required standby in Article 701, and optional standby in Article 702. Which one your loads fall under is set by the building's design and the authority having jurisdiction, and it decides how the system is wired, separated and tested.

  • NEC 700, 701 and 702 explained before the bid
  • Wiring and separation to match the classification
  • The testing the classification calls for

Automatic transfer switches

The automatic transfer switch moves the loads to the generator when the utility fails and back when it returns. We install and wire the switches, the feeders and the connections at the service and distribution equipment.

  • Transfer switch installation and wiring
  • Feeders between the generator, the switch and the service
  • Start up and transfer tests

Fuel and placement

Natural gas units need a gas line sized for the generator, which is a licensed plumber's work that we coordinate and quote separately. Diesel units carry their own fuel tank, and the fuel vendor fills it. Placement is set by the setbacks and the access the code and the manufacturer call for.

  • Gas line coordinated with a licensed plumber
  • Placement checked before the pad
  • Access for service

Permits and inspection

Inside the city limits, commercial electrical permits go through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department, and the suburban cities run their own permit offices. We pull the electrical permit, schedule the inspections and meet the inspector.

Maintenance and testing

A standby system has to start when it is needed. Scheduled maintenance covers the generator, the batteries and the transfer switch, and emergency systems carry the testing and records NFPA 110 and the authority having jurisdiction require.

  • Scheduled service visits
  • Transfer switch tests
  • Written records after each visit
