Medical office standby generators for San Antonio medical and dental practices
A practice that cannot cancel a day of patients for an outage, or that keeps vaccines or samples cold, puts those loads on standby power. We size the generator from your equipment sheets, wire it to the classification the design sets, and do the work around your patient schedule. Licensed by TDLR and insured for commercial work.
We sell and install Generac home standby and commercial generators.
What does a medical office standby generator installation include?
A medical office standby generator installation includes a load study from your equipment sheets, the automatic transfer switch, wiring to the classification the design professional and the authority having jurisdiction set under NEC 700, 701 or 702, the permit and inspection, and scheduled maintenance. Shutdowns happen after hours, agreed with the practice manager in writing.
What has to stay on
The list starts with what keeps patients moving and what cannot warm up: the refrigerators holding vaccines or samples, the exam and treatment room lighting, and the equipment a day of appointments depends on. In a dental office that often means the chairs, the compressor, the vacuum pump and the sterilizers. You choose the loads with us, and the size follows the list.
Imaging units, sterilizers, compressors, vacuum pumps and dental chairs each come with an installation sheet naming the voltage, the circuit size and whether the circuit must be dedicated. We build the load list from those sheets and from measurements, including how the compressor and vacuum motors start, and leave room for equipment the practice plans to add.
NEC Article 517 covers health care facilities, including medical and dental offices, wherever patients are examined or treated. Standby power itself is treated three ways: emergency systems in Article 700, legally required standby in Article 701, and optional standby in Article 702. The design professional and the authority having jurisdiction decide the classification, and where the job calls for stamped drawings we work from the design professional's plans and wire the system to match.

The transfer switch in an open practice
The automatic transfer switch moves the chosen loads to the generator when the utility fails and back when it returns. Connecting it means a shutdown, so it is planned around the schedule: after hours, agreed with the practice manager in writing, and with no circuit opened without knowing what equipment is on it.
A natural gas unit needs a gas line sized for the generator. Gas line and gas connection are not included. That is a licensed plumber's work and we quote it separately. We coordinate the plumber with the electrical work. A diesel unit carries its own fuel tank, and the fuel vendor fills it. Placement is set by the setbacks and the service access the code and the manufacturer call for.

Permits and inspection
Inside the city limits, commercial electrical permits go through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department, and the suburban cities run their own permit offices. We pull the electrical permit, schedule the inspections and meet the inspector. The inspector looks at the panel labeling and the working space NEC 110.26 requires in front of each panel, and the plumber handles the gas permit.

Maintenance and testing
A standby system has to start when it is needed. Scheduled maintenance covers the generator, the batteries and the transfer switch, with written records after each visit, and emergency systems carry the testing and records NFPA 110 and the authority having jurisdiction require.
What do medical and dental offices ask about standby generators?
Straight answers. If you do not see yours, call us and ask.
Yes. We sell and install Generac home standby and commercial generators. We install the generator, the transfer switch and the electrical connections, and coordinate the gas line with a licensed plumber.
