What you pay for

How much does a Generac generator cost for a 2,000 sq ft house?

There is no single figure for a house that size, because every house is different. The installed price is the generator, the transfer switch, the electrical work, the gas line, the placement and the permit added together, and the unit's size comes from your load list. We write your price after a free sizing visit, with no obligation.

The generator

The unit's size is the largest single part of the price, and the size comes from your load list. A home that needs the air conditioning on in an outage needs a larger unit than one that runs essential circuits only.

  • 14kW: rated 14,000 watts on natural gas by Generac
  • 18kW: rated 17,000 watts on natural gas by Generac
  • 22kW: rated 19,500 watts on natural gas by Generac
  • 24kW: rated 21,000 watts on natural gas by Generac
  • 26kW: rated 22,500 watts on natural gas by Generac

The transfer switch

A whole house, service rated switch costs more than an essential circuit switch, and load management for a large air conditioner adds parts. The switch also has to suit your service size.

  • Whole house or essential circuits
  • Load management for large loads
  • Matched to your service size

The electrical work

The wiring between the generator, the switch and the panel grows with the distance between them. An older or full panel can need work before the switch goes in.

  • Distance from the unit to the panel
  • Panel condition and space
  • Any service work the install needs

The gas line

Gas line and gas connection are not included. That is a licensed plumber's work and we quote it separately. The cost moves with the distance from the meter, whether the meter has to be upsized, and the route the line takes.

Placement and permit

The unit sits where the setbacks from windows, doors and the property line allow, on a pad. The electrical permit and the inspection are part of every install, and the gas line has its own permit.

Your own number

Every house is different, so we write your installed price after a free sizing visit: the unit, the switch and the electrical work on one written price, with the gas line quoted separately. There is no obligation.
