What an electrical contractor does in a server room

What does an electrician do in a data center or server room?

An electrician installs the power a server room runs on: dedicated rack circuits, UPS input, output and bypass wiring, generator transfer switches and power for the cooling. We do not design the system. We install to the design professional's drawings and the equipment sheets, and plan every shutdown in writing with your IT team.

Dedicated circuits for the racks

Each rack's power distribution units need their own circuits at the voltage and receptacle type on the equipment sheets. Circuits are labeled at both ends so a technician can trace any rack back to its breaker without guessing. Where racks are fed from two sources, the two paths are kept separate all the way back.

  • Rack circuits to the PDU specifications
  • Labels at the breaker and at the rack
  • Separate A and B feeds where the design calls for them

UPS installation wiring

A UPS sits between the utility power and the equipment. We wire its input, its output and its bypass to the manufacturer's drawings, so the room can be kept running while the UPS itself is serviced. The UPS sizing and the design come from the equipment supplier and the design professional.

  • Input, output and bypass wiring
  • Maintenance bypass so the UPS can be serviced
  • Panels fed from the UPS output

Generator tie-ins

A standby generator carries the room through a long outage once the UPS has bridged the first moments. We install and wire the transfer switch and the feeders between the generator, the switch and the distribution, and test the transfer under load with your team watching.

Power for the cooling

Server rooms lose their equipment to heat as surely as to a power failure. Cooling units need their own circuits and disconnects from the units' sheets, and the design decides whether they ride on the generator. We wire them so cooling stays up whenever the racks do, where the design calls for it.

Code, permit and the room's rules

NEC Article 645 applies to information technology equipment rooms that meet its conditions, including how the room's disconnecting means works. Inside the city limits the permit goes through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department, under the 2023 NEC the city adopted effective May 1, 2025. Surge protection at the service and the distribution panels protects the equipment from outside events.

Working in a live room

Most server room work happens around equipment that cannot stop. Every shutdown is planned with your IT team in writing: which circuits, in what order, and how long. We work after hours where the room's load is lowest, and confirm each circuit is the right one before it is opened.

  • Written outage plans agreed with IT
  • After-hours windows
  • Each circuit verified before it is opened

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

The common faults are unlabeled circuits, a second feed that turns out to share a panel with the first, and loose connections that heat up under steady load. We label everything we install, trace both feeds back before a job closes, and offer infrared scans of the loaded panels as part of a maintenance agreement.

FAQ

What do IT and facility teams ask about server room power?

Straight answers. If you do not see yours, call us and ask.

No. The design comes from a design professional and the equipment suppliers. We install the circuits, the UPS wiring, the generator tie-ins and the cooling power to those drawings.
