Working in Dallas

Does an electrical contractor need to register with Dallas to get a permit?

Yes. Dallas will not issue a permit to an electrical contractor that is not registered with the city or whose insurance has expired, and the master electrician registers in person. Permits come from the Electrical Section of Building Inspection at 320 East Jefferson Boulevard, and the city adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code, effective May 23, 2025.

Commercial and industrial work in Dallas

Dallas work ranges from downtown and uptown tenant suites to the distribution and light industrial buildings around the city, with occupied buildings where outages have to be scheduled around business hours. We take on commercial, industrial and commercial standby generator work in Dallas.

  • Tenant build-outs and remodels
  • Commercial electrical repair
  • Industrial power, motor controls and equipment hookups
  • Service upgrades
  • Commercial standby generators

New-construction residential in Dallas

For production and custom home builders in the Dallas area, we wire new homes: whole-house rough-in and trim-out, service entrances and temporary power. Service calls, repairs and remodels on existing homes stay in the San Antonio area only.

  • Service entrances
  • Temporary power

Who owns the wires

Oncor Electric Delivery owns the wires in Dallas. Oncor does not sell electricity: Dallas is in the competitive retail market, the business picks its provider, and Oncor delivers the power. Service upgrades and new meters are coordinated with Oncor.

Permits in Dallas

Electrical permits in Dallas come from the Development Services Department, through the Electrical Section of Building Inspection at 320 East Jefferson Boulevard. We pull the electrical permit, schedule the inspections and meet the inspector.

Contractor registration

Dallas will not issue a permit to an electrical contractor that is not registered with the city, whose registration has expired or whose insurance has expired, and the master electrician registers in person. The registration is in place before the permit is pulled, so it never holds up a start date.

Which code edition applies

The Dallas City Council adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code, effective May 23, 2025. TDLR adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code as the state electrical code effective September 1, 2026, and cities adopt their own editions and amendments, so the edition that applies is the one the permit office reviews your permit under.

How we run a job away from San Antonio

Every job starts with a written bid: the scope, the permit, the inspections and how changes are priced. The schedule is set with you before we travel, outages are planned around your hours, and every change gets a written price and your approval before the work is done.

  • A written bid before work begins
  • Outages scheduled around your hours
  • Change orders priced and approved first
