What the work involves

When can electrical work be done at a school or daycare?

Larger school and daycare electrical work is scheduled for summer and long breaks, and smaller work after dismissal. We order long lead items as soon as the scope is approved, so a summer project does not run into the first week of school. Where children are present, work areas are closed off.

Classrooms and technology

Classrooms now carry projectors, charging carts and devices on every desk, and older buildings were not wired for them. We add circuits where the load has grown, and plan receptacle locations with the school so cords are not run across the floor.

Labs, shops and kitchens

Science labs, career shops and cafeteria kitchens each have their own equipment circuits and the GFCI protection NEC 210.8(B) requires in the locations it lists. Shop equipment gets disconnects where the code calls for them.

Emergency lighting and exit signs

Hallways and stairs must stay lit when the power fails. NFPA 101 sets a monthly 30 second test and an annual 90 minute test for battery units, with written records, and we keep those records ready for the fire marshal.

Working around the school year

Larger work is scheduled for summer and long breaks, and smaller work after dismissal. On a site with children present, our work areas are closed off and no open panel or tool is left unattended.

Public school districts

Public districts usually buy through bids, approved vendor lists and cooperative contracts. We bid in writing to the district's scope and pull the permit where the work needs one.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

Summer projects go wrong when parts arrive late and the work runs into the first week of school. We order long lead items as soon as the scope is approved, and plan the work so each room is finished and safe before the next is opened.
