What the work involves

How can a church schedule electrical work around its services?

Church electrical work is scheduled on weekdays between services and events, and every shutdown is agreed with the church office in advance. The building committee gets a written bid with the scope, the permit and the inspections, whether the job is sanctuary lighting and dimming, sound booth circuits or a fellowship hall kitchen.

Sanctuary lighting and dimming

High sanctuary ceilings make relamping a lift job, which is why many churches move to LED fixtures that last far longer between changes. Dimming has to match the fixtures, or the lights flicker at low levels. We plan the fixtures and the dimming system together.

Sound, video and stage power

Audio equipment picks up noise from shared circuits and poor grounding. Dedicated circuits for the sound booth and the stage, run from one panel, keep the system quiet. Surge protection at that panel protects the equipment.

Fellowship halls, kitchens and classrooms

A fellowship hall kitchen is a commercial kitchen when it serves meals, with GFCI protection where NEC 210.8(B) requires it. Classrooms used for children's ministry need the same care for receptacles and lighting as any school room.

Working around services

Work is scheduled on weekdays between services and events, and shutdowns are agreed with the church office in advance. Building committees get a written bid with the scope, the permit and the inspections, so the decision can be made in one meeting.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

Older church buildings were added onto over decades, with panels and wiring of different ages. We trace and label what feeds what before adding load, and check the oldest panels first.
