What the work involves

What NEC article covers gas station dispenser wiring?

NEC Article 514 covers wiring at and around fuel dispensers, along with the classified locations it defines around the dispensers and tanks. Those locations call for specific wiring methods and seals, which we install to the article and the dispenser supplier's sheets. We also wire and test the emergency shutoff so it cuts the dispensers when pressed.

Dispenser wiring

Wiring at and around fuel dispensers falls under NEC Article 514, motor fuel dispensing facilities, and the classified locations it defines around the dispensers and tanks. Those locations call for specific wiring methods and seals, and we install them to the article and the equipment's requirements.

  • Wiring methods for classified locations
  • Seals where the code requires them
  • Circuits to the dispenser supplier's sheets

Emergency shutoffs

Dispensing equipment needs an emergency shutoff that the attendant and customers can reach, located as the code and the fire marshal require. We wire and test the shutoff so it cuts the dispensers when pressed.

Canopy and site lighting

Canopy lights, pole lights and signs run long hours and are what customers see from the road. We repair and retrofit canopy and site lighting to LED and find faults in photocells, timers and underground circuits.

Coolers and store equipment

Walk-in coolers, reach-ins, ice machines, food equipment and the point of sale each need their own circuits. We wire from the cut sheets and keep refrigeration on circuits that a fault elsewhere will not take down.

Standby power

A station that keeps selling fuel and keeps its coolers cold through an outage needs a generator and a transfer switch sized for those loads.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

Water and fuel vapor are the hazards at a station, and wiring that is not sealed or rated for the location fails or becomes dangerous. We use the methods the classified locations call for, test the emergency shutoff, and keep coolers on their own circuits.

Permits and inspections

Inside the city limits, the electrical permit goes through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department, under the 2023 National Electrical Code the city adopted effective May 1, 2025. We pull the permit and meet the inspector. Fuel systems also go through the fire marshal and the state's fuel storage rules, which the station owner's fuel contractor handles.
