What the work involves

What electrical systems keep a cold storage facility running?

A cold storage facility runs on refrigeration compressors and condensers wired from their nameplates and NEC Article 430, defrost circuits sized from the equipment sheets, and freezer lighting rated for the cold. A standby generator and transfer switch sized for the refrigeration keep product cold through an outage, with monitoring and alarms often on the standby system.

Compressors and condensers

Refrigeration compressors and condensing units are motor loads with heavy starting current, wired from their nameplates and NEC Article 430, with disconnects within sight. We work with the refrigeration contractor so the power is ready when the equipment is set.

Walk-ins and defrost circuits

Walk-in boxes need power for the evaporators, the defrost heaters, the door heaters and the lights. Defrost heaters are a heavy load on their own schedule, and we size their circuits from the equipment sheets.

Lighting in coolers and freezers

Lights inside freezers have to start and run in the cold and handle condensation at the door. We install fixtures rated for the temperature and the location.

Power for monitoring and alarms

Temperature monitoring and alarm systems need reliable power, often on the standby system. We provide the circuits; the monitoring systems are set up by their suppliers.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

A loose connection on a compressor or a failed defrost circuit can cost a room full of product. A maintenance agreement puts infrared scans of loaded refrigeration equipment on a schedule, and the emergency line answers 24 hours a day when something fails.

Permits

Inside the city limits, the electrical permit goes through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department, under the 2023 National Electrical Code the city adopted effective May 1, 2025. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.
