What the work involves

What electrical code applies to barns and livestock buildings?

Barns and agricultural buildings that house livestock or collect dust and moisture fall under NEC Article 547. It calls for wiring methods and equipment that stand up to corrosion, dust and washdown, so we wire lighting, receptacles and equipment circuits to that article, not to the rules for an ordinary shop.

  • Wiring methods suited to dust and moisture
  • Enclosures rated for the location
  • GFCI protection where the code requires it

Wells and pumps

Well pumps and pressure systems need a circuit and a disconnect sized from the pump's nameplate, and a long run from the service needs its conductors sized so the pump still starts at the far end. We work from the pump supplier's sheets and the distance on the ground.

Irrigation

Irrigation pumps, controllers and pivots draw heavy motor loads and often sit far from the service. We plan the feeder, the disconnects and the controls so the system starts reliably and can be shut off safely where people work on it.

Feed and grain equipment

Augers, mixers, dryers and conveyors are motor loads with their own starting current and controls. Each one gets its circuit, its disconnect within sight where the code requires it, and controls wired to the equipment's drawings.

Service and distribution between buildings

A property with several buildings usually needs feeders and a disconnect at each one, and grounding and bonding done building by building. Adding equipment often starts with a load calculation to see whether the service can carry it.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

Most farm electrical failures come from corrosion, rodents and moisture getting into wiring that was never meant for the location, and from equipment added over the years on circuits that were too small. We use methods and enclosures rated for the space, size circuits from the nameplates, and label what feeds what.

Permits

Permit rules depend on where the property is: inside a city's limits the city's permit office applies, and outside them the county and the utility's own requirements apply. We confirm which rules apply to the address before we bid, pull any permit the work needs, and coordinate service changes with the utility.
