Wattsmith Electric

Commercial electrician for animal hospitals

Veterinary clinic electrician for San Antonio animal hospitals

A veterinary clinic has the equipment of a medical office and the floors of a kennel: imaging, surgery lights, sterilizers and lab equipment beside runs and wash areas that are hosed down every day. We wire both halves to the equipment's sheets and the code.

What the work involves

Which electrical code rules apply to a veterinary clinic?

A veterinary clinic is wired to the general commercial rules of the code plus what each piece of equipment's sheets call for, because NEC Article 517 covers health care facilities for people, not veterinary facilities. Imaging, surgery and lab equipment get dedicated circuits from their sheets, and kennel runs and wash areas are wired as wet locations.

Which code rules apply

NEC Article 517, the article for human health care facilities, does not apply to veterinary facilities, so a clinic is wired to the general commercial rules of the code plus what each piece of equipment's sheets call for. The 2023 NEC is what San Antonio adopted effective May 1, 2025, and inside the city the permit comes from the Development Services Department.

Imaging, surgery and lab equipment

X-ray and other imaging units, surgery lights, anesthesia equipment, autoclaves and lab analyzers each come with sheets naming the voltage, the circuit size and whether the circuit must be dedicated. Imaging equipment can be sensitive to voltage drop, so its circuit is sized and routed from the manufacturer's requirements.

  • Dedicated circuits from the equipment sheets
  • Imaging circuits sized for voltage drop
  • Surge protection on sensitive equipment

Kennels, runs and wash areas

Kennel runs, bathing tables and wash areas are wet locations. Receptacles there need GFCI protection where the code requires it, boxes and fixtures rated for wet locations, and placement above the spray line and out of reach of the animals.

  • Wet location rated boxes and fixtures
  • GFCI protection where required
  • Devices placed above the washdown line

Lighting

Exam and treatment rooms need bright, even light, kennel areas need fixtures that stand up to washdown, and corridors need exit and emergency lighting. LED fixtures with controls meet the energy code and cut the lamp changes in rooms that are hard to empty.

Build-outs and backup power

A new clinic or a remodel follows the commercial build-out sequence: plans, permit, rough-in, above-ceiling and final inspections. Clinics with boarding animals, freezers or overnight patients often add a standby generator so the cooling and the critical rooms stay on in an outage.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

The usual problems are imaging equipment sharing a circuit, corroded devices in wash areas, and a panel with no room for the next piece of equipment. Dedicated circuits from the sheets, wet rated materials and a panel planned with spare capacity prevent them.

FAQ

What do clinic owners ask about kennels, imaging and code rules?

Straight answers. If you do not see yours, call us and ask.

No. Article 517 covers health care facilities for people, and veterinary facilities are not included, so a clinic follows the general commercial rules of the code and the equipment's own requirements.
