What the work involves

What electrical work does a car wash need?

A car wash needs wiring built for water: wet location enclosures and fittings, GFCI protection where the code requires it, and motor circuits for conveyors, brushes, blowers and high pressure pumps under NEC Article 430. We also wire tunnel controllers, pay stations, chemical systems, vacuum stations and site lighting, and keep connections out of the spray.

Wet location wiring

A wash bay is a wet location, and every enclosure, fitting and device in it has to be rated for one. We use wet location methods and equipment and keep connections out of the spray wherever the layout allows.

  • Enclosures and fittings rated for wet locations
  • GFCI protection where the code requires it
  • Connections kept out of the spray

Motors and pumps

Conveyors, brushes, blowers and high pressure pumps are motor loads with heavy starting current, wired under NEC Article 430 with disconnects within sight where it requires them.

Controls and equipment hookups

Tunnel controllers, pay stations and chemical systems are wired to the equipment supplier's drawings, so the equipment arrives to power and controls that are ready for it.

Vacuums and site lighting

Vacuum stations, pay kiosks and site lighting run outdoors and long hours. We wire them for the weather and repair site lighting faults when they come up.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

Water in enclosures, corroded connections and GFCI trips are the usual calls. We use rated equipment, seal what the code calls for, and an infrared scan on a maintenance visit finds hot connections on loaded motors before they fail.

Service size and permits

Car wash equipment can outgrow a service, so a new tunnel or added bay starts with a load calculation. Inside the city limits, the electrical permit goes through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department, under the 2023 National Electrical Code the city adopted effective May 1, 2025. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.
