What the work involves

What electrical requirements does an auto repair shop have?

An auto repair shop needs circuits for lifts, tire machines, balancers and welders wired from each manufacturer's sheet, many at 240 volts and some needing three-phase power. The air compressor is sized under NEC Article 430, and repair garages follow NEC Article 511 for wiring near floor level and in pits where fuel vapor can collect.

Lifts and shop equipment

Vehicle lifts, tire machines, balancers and welders each come with a manufacturer's sheet that names the voltage, phase and circuit. Many run at 240 volts, and some need three-phase power. We wire each from its sheet, with the disconnects where the code requires them.

Air compressors

The shop air compressor is often the largest motor in the building, with heavy starting current. We size its circuit, disconnect and controls from its nameplate and NEC Article 430.

Repair garage wiring rules

Repair garages where vehicles are worked on fall under NEC Article 511, which sets rules for wiring near floor level and in pits where fuel vapor can collect. We place receptacles and wiring to the article.

Bay lighting

Technicians need bright, even light in every bay and under the lifts. We retrofit and install LED high bays and task lighting.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

Shops grow equipment faster than circuits, so breakers trip and receptacles overheat. We size circuits from the equipment sheets, check the service with a load calculation before adding large equipment, and label the panel.

Permits

Inside the city limits, the electrical permit goes through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department, under the 2023 National Electrical Code the city adopted effective May 1, 2025. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.

FAQ

What do auto shop owners ask about lifts, compressors and chargers?

Straight answers. If you do not see yours, call us and ask.

Most do. The lift manufacturer's sheet names the voltage, phase and circuit, and we wire it to that sheet.
