Control panels, set and field wired

Industrial control panel installation and field wiring in San Antonio

Industrial control panels are built and listed by a UL 508A panel shop or by the equipment maker. Our part is everything after the panel arrives: setting it, feeding it, running the field wiring to the motors, sensors and devices it controls, and being there when it starts up.

What the work involves

Who builds an industrial control panel, and who installs it?

A UL 508A panel shop or the equipment maker builds and lists the panel, and we install it. We set it with the working space the code requires, feed it from a circuit sized to its nameplate, check the available fault current against its marked short circuit current rating, run and label the field wiring, and stay through startup.

Who builds the panel

The panel itself is built and listed by a UL 508A panel shop or the equipment maker, and NEC Article 409 covers industrial control panels and the short circuit current rating marked on them. We do not build listed panels; we install them and wire them in the field.

Setting and feeding the panel

The panel is set where the drawings place it, with the working space in front of it the code requires, and fed from a circuit sized to its nameplate. The available fault current at the panel is checked against its marked short circuit current rating before it is energized.

  • Placement with the required working space
  • A feeder sized to the nameplate
  • Fault current checked against the panel's rating

Field wiring

Field wiring runs from the panel to the motors, valves, sensors and operator stations it controls, in raceways kept separate from power where the drawings call for it. Every conductor is terminated and labeled to the panel builder's drawings, so a fault can be traced from the drawing to the device.

  • Motor, sensor and device wiring
  • Control kept apart from power
  • Terminations labeled to the drawings

Startup

Before startup we check continuity and terminations against the drawings, confirm motor rotation with the equipment's representative, and stay through startup to correct field wiring the commissioning finds. The programming belongs to the panel builder or the integrator.

Permits and inspection

Inside the city, the installation is permitted and inspected through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department under the 2023 NEC the city adopted effective May 1, 2025. The inspector looks at the listing label, the working space and the feeder.

What goes wrong, and how we prevent it

The common problems are a panel whose rating is below the fault current where it is installed, field wiring that does not match the drawings, and control wiring pulled with power. Checking the rating before energizing, wiring and labeling to the drawings, and separating control from power prevent them.
